A 55-year-old Owosso woman has been fined $240 after being found guilty of careless driving in a collision that injured former US Ambassador Peter Secchia, his wife and two friends.

The charge filed in Clinton County District Court against Susan Cole is a civil infraction. Testimony was given during a hearing yesterday in Saint Johns.

Secchia was an ambassador to Italy from 1989 through 1993 and is a major Republican donor and activist.

The accident happened January 14 on Interstate 69 near DeWitt when the vehicle carrying Secchia and the others was rear-ended.

Secchia suffered broken ribs. His wife, Joan, and a female friend who was with them are still recovering from their most serious injuries.
