For the first time in two years, Lansing Car Assembly is bringing on new employees.

About 80 people will join the body and chassis plants during the next two weeks.

The two General Motors plants haven't hired new faces since June 2000, mainly because of company cutbacks and plant closings.

The new employees are filling vacancies left by retirements or transfers.

The plants build the Pontiac Grand Am, Oldsmobile Alero and Chevy Malibu. They've been working overtime all summer to boost production.

New employees make about $16 an hour. On average, GM employees make $22 an hour.
