Charlotte Police and the Canadian National Railroad are both investigating a deadly accident after a mother and daughter are killed when a train hit their car.
The accident happened just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night on West Lawrence Avenue in Charlotte. An Amtrak passenger train struck the Pontiac 45-year-old Melanie Pouch and her 15-year-old daughter Meghann were in. Melanie Pouch died at the scene, and her daughter died several hours later.
Police say witnesses tell them either the flashing signals or the crossing guards were not working at the time of the incident. Police and the CN Railroad say they are investigating the possibility, but have not confirmed anything.
Police say the results of their investigation could take several weeks. The railroad says they should be done in a couple of days. Railroad officials say data recorders on the train and at the crossing should provide more information on what happened at the time of the accident.
Police say the Pouchs are long-time Charlotte residents. Meghann was a sophomore at Charlotte High School, involved in softball, the diversity club, and lifeguarding.
