State Budget Woes

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A recent national report suggests Michigan's state government budget problems are among the worst in the nation.
Michigan is one of relatively few states where revenues coming into the government for this fiscal year trail the most recent official forecasts. That's according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
While some states expect to spend more money on schools and other programs than they had first planned, Michigan may cut back in some of the same areas.
At least 11 states plan to spend more money on higher education. Michigan plans to delay state aid payments to universities and community colleges and might cut per-pupil funding to K-through-12 schools this summer.
