Lansing City Councilmember Randy Williams submitted a letter of resignation to the council Monday night.

"Representing the citizens of Lansing on council has been one of the hardest and yet most rewarding things I have ever done," he said in the letter read by Councilmember Carol Wood during Monday's council meeting.

"It is with a heavy heart that due to personal reasons, I will be resigning my seat as Third Ward Councilmember, effective today, April 9, 2007."

In a phone interview with News 10, Williams said the letter summed up his feelings. In it, he called his departure "the right decision for me and my family."

Williams was first elected to council in November 2003. He started serving in February of that year after being appointed to the seat made vacant by Tony Benavides' election as mayor.

The city's current mayor, Virg Bernero, called the announcement "a real shock."

"Randy was a real passionate member of council," he said. "We didn't always agree on everything, but he was certainly someone who cares about Lansing and gave a lot of hours, alot of time, was very dedicated to the city."

"I wish him and his family all the best," the mayor said.

The city charter states the seven remaining council members have to appoint a replacement to serve through the end of Williams' term, which runs through January 2008.

His replacement could choose to ask voters in November to continue to serve. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
