Don't worry about slowing down to 55 mph; the speed limit is now set at 70. The increase went into effect Monday on east and westbound Interstate 496 and portions of US 127.
State Police say it will make both highways safer since the majority of drivers were already driving faster than the posted limits.
Michigan State Police have changed the speed limit on at least 50 roads, for safety reasons, in the last three years. In mid-Michigan, they increased the limits on Saginaw Street to, in some places, 45 mph.
