A 19-year-old male special needs student mysteriously died Friday afternoon while training for a Special Olympics swim competition. It happened around 1 p.m. at Mason High School while the Heartwood student was using the pool to swim laps.
Heartwood School Psychologist Mark Manning says the student, whose name is being withheld until all relatives are notified, was in the middle of a lap when lifeguards noticed something was wrong. Lifeguards immediately assisted and helped pull the student out of the pool. He was taken to Sparrow Hospital and shortly after 3 p.m., school officials were told the student had died.
No details have been released about why he died. Manning says the student was a good swimmer and had just returned back to Heartwood, a special needs school part of the Ingham Intermediate School District, to work on his vocational skills.
