Alcohol and Minors

(Lansing-AP) -- Minors repeatedly caught with alcohol or some alcohol in their system could face jail time under a bill approved today by the state House.

The bill only won approval after it was amended to exempt those who had been drinking in Canada, where the legal drinking age is 18 in some places.

The House voted to send the amended bill back to the Senate for that chamber's approval of the change. It's unclear how the Senate will receive the alteration.

Macomb County Representative Leon Drolet says it's not fair to punish in Michigan a minor who was drinking alcohol legally in another country.

Minimum drinking age laws in Canada are set by each province. Three provinces set the consumption age at 18 and the others are at 19.
