On an 11-six vote, the House Transportation Committee has approved a bill to create a "Choose Life" specialty license plate with the money from the sale going to fund adoption agencies for unwanted children.
The measure was opposed by the Michigan ACLU, which claims the measure is unconstitutional, unfair, and will further divide the state on the abortion issue, as the plate advocates the right to life position. The group called for the panel to create a Pro-Choice plate, but that was turned down.
The bill's sponsor Rep. Gary Newell says this is not a political issue, and he hopes for house approval soon. The governor's office has indicated that if the Choose Life measure gets to her desk, she will choose to veto it.
