Jason Plite Remembered

By  |

It's been one year since the death of Senior Airman Jason Plite. He died March 23, 2003 when his Pavehawk helicopter crashed in Afghanistan. Now, his family and friends have set up a scholarship fund to keep his memory alive.

Plite's mother, Dawn Peterson, says her son was a passionate person, passionate about his work in the Air Force, but also passionate about art and swimming. Plite graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1999. While there, he set school swimming records and excelled as an artist.

Nearly 1,000 people attended his funeral. After an outpouring of support from the community, the Jason Plite Memorial Foundation was set up. The memorial fund will award an annual scholarship to a Grand Ledge student in art or a grant in swimming. The first award will be given at a fundraising dinner at the Grand Ledge Opera house on April 15.

For more information on the fund, a website has been set up at www.jasonplitememorial.com.
