Police in East Lansing Prep For St. Patty's Day

By  |

Both MSU and East Lansing police are beefing up their presences all over town this weekend, starting Friday night and going into early Sunday.

ELPD Capt. Tom Johnstone says he's bringing in extra staff this weekend in anticipation of the crowds the Spartan NCAA tournament basketball game and the St. Patty's Day celebration will bring to town.

MSU police Sgt. Florene McGothian-Taylor says her men and women in blue will aid the ELPD throughout the weekend and will also add more police to the weekend shifts.

Because many bars in town are opening at 7 a.m., Johnstone says it will be a long day for the policemen and women. The basketball game doesn't start until after 8 p.m.

Both Johnstone and McGothian-Taylor don't hesitate to say if people are destructive or get in fights, they will go to jail. Drinking-related offenses are typically common during St. Patty's Day.
