A jury has convicted a woman on felony charges of torturing and abusing her 6-year-old son.
Jeannine Nyies faces a maximum sentence of life in prison at her sentencing hearing April 25 in Jackson County Circuit Court.
"We are very pleased," Susan Beebe, an assistant prosecutor for the county, told the Jackson Citizen Patriot after the verdict Thursday. "I feel like justice has been done."
Nyies expressed regret while testifying, saying she wished that she could receive the same injuries that had been inflicted on her son.
Defense attorney Anthony Raduazo said Nyies did not "willingly and intentionally" abuse her son, but did so only at the urging of her live-in boyfriend, Ian Anderson, who recently was found guilty of the same charges.
The court heard that Anderson repeatedly spanked the boy with a plastic spatula and that the child had been punished by being locked in a basement, where, he was told, spiders would lay eggs in his ears.
