Former church treasurer Kevin Schaibley faces trial on embezzlement charges, after police say he embezzled nearly $150,000 from the Ascension Lutheran Church in East Lansing.
Prosecutors say Schaibley took nearly all a $165,000 inheritance the church received and invested it in a local company, NCI Technologies. His defense attorney, Andrew Abood, says his client was trying to act in the best interest of the church, but prosecutors say Schaibley acted without permission of the church.
Abood says the investment agreement with NCI ends in October, but the church has yet to recover any of the lost funds. If convicted, Schaibley faces up to ten years in prison and $450,000 in fines.
