A 22-year-old Marine from Bay City has been shot and killed at a checkpoint in Iraq.
Private first class Bufford "Kenny" VanSlyke was slain Tuesday night in Fallujah. VanSlyke's mother Cindy Fisher says he had all of his gear on but a shot went through his armor.
His mother says VanSlyke was her hero. She says he and his wife just had a son and they'll never get to see each other again.
VanSlyke also leaves behind a father and two step-parents.
The Defense Department hadn't released any information about him this afternoon.
