Waverly Community Schools Adds Program, Cuts Bus Routes

Waverly Community Schools will start offering an all day kindergarten program next fall and that's not going over well with some bus drivers.

Students will attend class for half of the day, then free, structured childcare will be available for free for the other half. The childcare activities will supplement the kindergarten program.

In turn, midday busing will be eliminated. The bus drivers union representative says 10 employees will lose nearly eight hours of pay per week, plus some health care benefits and retirement funds too.

The district will evaluate its all day program at the end of the 2007-2008 school year. Registration is free for the half-day K.A.P. or kindergarten activities program. Typically, registration for a program like it would cost about $50.
