It's not what Consumers Energy customers want to hear, but heating bills for the month of January will be some of the highest ever.
According to Consumers Energy, January heating bills will increase by about $63 from the same month a year ago. On average, customers will pay about $177.14 for their bill. In January of 2003, customers were paying $114.60.
The utility says this January was about 15-percent colder than last and gas prices for Consumers Energy are on the rise. It costs the company 55 cents per hundred cubic feet for gas. Last year it was 37 cents.
Consumers Energy says it's glad to work with customers who may be late with payment or cannot pay a bill. It says it nationally ranks among the lowest 10-percent for gas costs.
