In her State of the State message this week Gov. Jennifer Granholm advised local units of government to get beyond their "turf and politics" and do more cooperating to cut expenses. The head of the Michigan Township Association says that is already being done.
Bill Anderson says doing more with less is one of the MTA's "basic philosophies." He says he would like to take the governor on a personal tour of townships to see first hand how the cost cutting is working.
The governor's comments left little doubt that cities, counties and townships will take another hit in their state revenue sharing funds. Anderson says he wishes the governor and lawmakers will not go to that first when state budget cuts are needed.
