Clayton Klein is heading to Hell.
No, the 90-year-old from Fowlerville is walking from Paradise, Mich., - in the upper peninsula, down to Hell, Mich.
"I get lots of comments," Klein says. "'Crazy old man, why don't you start in Hell and walk to Paradise? It sounds so much better.'"
It's the fifth year Clayton's made the trek from Paradise, to Hell, to Ohio, a grand total of 417 miles.
He's made it about halfway so far, and he's got some bumps and bruises to show for it.
"I fell and messed up my face, but it's coming along okay," Klein says, of the fall he took Saturday in St. Johns. "I feel good... I'm happy to be able to continue and complete the walk again this year."
Clayton set off from Lansing's Flap Jack Restaurant Tuesday morning, and will walk down Grand River, toward Williamston, as he begins the second half of his trip.
"He just loves to walk," says Natalie Brocieus, of the Michigan Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
That's one reason he pounds the pavement. The other? To raise money for Michigan Hospice and Palliative Care organizations, because they took care of his wife before she passed away about six years ago.
"They did so much good and I really appreciate it," Klein says.
"We're just humbled by it," Brocieus says of the Clayton's walk. "He's inspiring to us. Every year it's just gotten better and it was just such a thrill to be with him this morning as he's going on with his walk now."
And he's off, picking up the pace, full speed ahead.
