Friend Sets Up Fund for Medical Bills

Shaukat Alvi, a family friend of the boy who nearly drowned at Lake Lansing on the Fourth of July, is collecting donations to help pay for Mohammad Sohaib Fida's medical bills.

Alvi set up a bank account at the Michigan State University Federal Credit Union. He said it could cost between $10,000 and $14,000 to transport Fida back to his home in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada on an air ambulance with ventilator equipment.

Alvi, who is hosting Fida's parents and four brothers and sisters at his Lansing home, said he hopes the donation fund will make enough money to help the family with other medical bills as well.

Alvi said Fida is in a coma and breathing with the help of a ventilator. He said doctors told him Fida has severe brain damage. However, family and friends still have hope that Fida will return to normal. They are requesting that people pray on his behalf.
