School districts are always looking for creative ways to cut costs, especially now with added budget pressure. In the last two fiscal years, more than $259 million has been cut to per pupil funding throughout the state.
One school in Upper Michigan is testing a four-day week to make up for its shortfalls and in Houghton Lake, longer days mean less total time in the classroom to save on staff and transportation costs.
Mark Mayes, spokesperson for the Lansing school district, says don't expect to see those changes in mid Michigan. Mayes says there's too many working parents to make a shortened week or longer school day successful.
But, districts always have the option of changing if they want to. Each individual school board has the authority to alter its calendar as long as 1,098 instruction hours are kept in tact.
