The tentative agreement between Lansing teachers and the school district does not include a wage increase for the 2006-2007 school year. Teachers could begin voting on their new contract this week.

The average starting salary for a teacher in the Lansing School district is about $35,000/year. The average annual salary for a teacher in the district is about $57,000. That's more than teachers in a bigger school district like Grand Rapids average annually.

The highest teacher salaries tend to first be in the Northeast, the Midwest comes in second. "Within the Midwest, Michigan ranks high," says Dr. Sharif Shakrani, co-director of the Education Policy Center at Michigan State University.

Michigan remains on top, at least for now, because the teachers are generally older, which means they've moved up the pay scale and there's more urban districts.
