Homicides On Rise

Lansing police say the number of homicides this year has already surpassed the total of eight from 2001. So far, the city has hit nine homicides.

Police say there is no relation between the crime and the area where the crime is committed. They also feel the increase is not related to anything specifically.

Police say there is one common thread among most of these cases. Victims and accused have been known to each other. In other words, these were not random acts of violence.

Even though the numbers are on the rise, authorities say residents should not fear for their lives and stay indoors. Instead, people should be more aware of the relationships they keep.

Police say the city averages 12 homicides a year or one a month. The highest total in the last couple of years came in 2000, when there were 15.
