The Michigan Senate has voted to increase the tax on a pick of cigarettes by 50 cents. The bill failed once, but squeaked by on a second vote with the 20 needed votes to pass.

The tax on a pack of cigarettes will go from 75 cents to $1.25 per pack beginning Aug. 1. That will make Michigan the third highest cigarette tax rate in the nation behind New York and Washington.

The tax hike will allow lawmakers to avoid cutting $150 million from health programs and revenue sharing for local governments.
