The Lansing City Council narrowed from 16 to four Tuesday night the list of candidates to fill the vacancy created by newly-elected State Rep. Joan Bauer (D-Lansing).

The finalists are Derrick Quinney of the Michigan AFL-CIO; Robin Smith, who serves on the boards of Lansing Community College and the Board of Water and Light; Edward Benson and Christopher McCarthy.

The four will be interviewed, each for a half hour, on Thursday night.

Former State Rep. Michael Murphy, who Bauer replaced in the state house, withdrew his name from contention. Murphy previously served on the council.
