In the wake of 2400 layoffs at the Pfizer drug company in Michigan, state lawmakers return to the capitol to grapple with diversifying the state's economy while trying to plug an $800 million hole in the state budget. Those items top the new year agenda but other issues such as Homeland Security and health care costs are up near the top as well. Senator Tom George says he wants to provide financial incentives to state government workers if they agree to visit the gym. Long term, the Kalamazoo senator contends that will reduce the cost of the state's health care insurance and save tax payer dollars at the same time.
