Titanic Survivor Dies in East Lansing

Winnifred Quick Van Tongerloo, one of the few remaining survivors of the Titanic sinking, has died at age 98. Ms. Van Tongerloos lived her final years in East Lansing.

She was eight when the Titanic went down during its maiden Atlantic Ocean crossing in 1912. She, her sister and her mother were sailing to join their father in Detroit when the Titanic sunk.

Ms. Van Tongerloo had moved to an assisted care home in East Lansing six years ago after breaking her hip in a fall. She died Thursday, July 4 and will buried in Detroit.
