The Jackson School Board voted unanimously to save $857,504 by cutting nearly 15 workers. Educators voiced their disgust, and school officials say state funding and declining enrollment is to blame.

Early in November the school forecasted a $2.2 million deficit. New forecasts, however, for state funding showed the district’s shortfall at $857,504.

To meet the revised shortfall the district voted to cut one administrator, one secretary, three maintenance workers, nine paraprofessionals and a part-time nurse.

The largest portion of the cuts fell on the paraprofessionals – 34-percent of the total.

According to the Jackson Education Association the cuts amount to 42 paraprofessionals dismissed in the last three years.
