Doctors are now armed with the latest technology that may be able to boost treatments for patients with cancer.
For years, doctors used the CT scan to detect tumors. However, they didn't have the equipment to record the cancer's activity. That's where doctors say the PET scan comes in.
By combining the two machines, patients can get two images instead of one.
Doctors hope this combination will allow them to use the images to boost treatments.
They say by taking the PET scan and putting it in software used in radiotherapy, doctors hope to give very high radiation doses targeted only on the tumor.
The normal tissue, however, will get a very low dose.
The combined scan also reduces the risk of invasive diagnostic procedures like biopsies.
