The man accused of murdering his mother in their Okemos home last week is asking prosecutors to consider him insane.
The attorney for 35-year-old Bramlett Hamilton is asking for an evaluation at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ypsilanti. There it can be determined if he is competent to stand trial.
Hamilton is accused of stabbing his mother to death on Nov. 11. The victim is 66-year-old Ruth Simms Hamilton. She was a well-known professor of African studies at Michigan State University.
The forensic evaluation could take several months.
