The gawkers were out in full force Wednesday, and who could really blame them?

On public display, two women, wearing next-to-nothing, soap suds everywhere, were showering during Lansing's lunch hour.

"It is very attention grabbing but it helps us get people over to speak with us about something a little more serious," says Amanda Fortino, PETA spokeswoman.

That "something serious" is a PETA campaign to get people to become vegetarians.

"It takes over 2,400 gallons of water to produce just one pound of meat," Fortino says. "That means you save more water by not eating one pound of meat than not showering for six months."

She says the water is used in everything from breeding the beef to running the factory farms.

But not everyone was buying it.

"I don't honestly [buy it]," says onlooker Chris O'Dell. "It's hard to imagine one pound of meat equals that much water."

Buy it or not, people were certainly paying attention and snapping shots.

"It's one of those things that makes you go 'Hmmm...'" says Shane Locke, also looking on.

But not everyone thinks this is the perfect photo opportunity; some people say they are straight up objectifying the women.

"I have no idea what two women in high heels taking a shower on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Washington Square has to do with the ethical treatment of animals. It's almost embarrassing," says Trace Cooley of Lansing.

"I actually think it's kind of ridiculous. I could understand trying to make a statement-- but seriously? Two chicks in a shower?" says Sarah Wardell of Mason.

Whether you agree with the campaign or not-- the question of its effectiveness remains:

"Absolutely not," O'Dell says when asked if the campaign will turn him into a vegetarian. "I'm probably going to get a burger for lunch as it is."

He's thankful for freedom of choice-- while they have freedom of expression.
