New Money Coming to Town

It's not an everyday occurrence. But Mark Farrell wouldn't mind bucking the counterfeit currency that puts phony bills in the hands of retailers. Three fakes have made their way into his retail registers over the years. He started his career more than twenty years ago.

Farrell marks his big bills with a trick pen that turns the paper black if the bill is counterfeit, but the government is helping out when it comes to counterfeit currency among smaller bills.

Last year, about forty percent of counterfeit bills were developed using digital technology. That's why the new bill will not only have the watermark and the security thread, but for the first time in modern history, it will feature colors other than black and green.

The money hasn't yet hit Mid-Michigan banks.
