We start with doctor Trinh Nguyen on South Cedar Street in Lansing. She says numerous cases of swimmers ear have been reported in her office. Symptoms include itching, pain and a feeling of fullness in the ear. The ear canal may be swollen. Typically, the pain is worse when you chew, press on the tag in front of the ear, or if you wiggle your earlobe. Sometimes fluid will be leaking from the ear.
Treatments include prescription antibiotic drops in the ear for 5 to 7 days and refraining from swimming for about the same time period. If your child has frequent infections, you may want to buy over-the-counter ear drops to use after swimming. Tylenol can help with the pain.
Doctor Mark Shaar at the Dewitt Family Practice on Escanaba Drive in Dewitt says many people are coming into his office with poison ivy, poison sumac and poison oak.
Symptoms include a blistery, oozing and extremely itchy red rash. The rash is usually present within 12 to 48 hours after exposure. Symptoms include swelling of the face, mouth, neck, genitals or eyelids or widespread large blisters that ooze large amounts of fluid. Treatments include washing with soap and water if you think you have come in contact with a plant. Sometimes the rash can be completely avoided by showering within 10 or 15 minutes of contact. Over-the-counter antihistamines can help with symptoms since poison ivy is an allergic skin reaction. Hydrocortisone cram and cool baths or compresses can help with itching. Prevent infection by not scratching. A doctor may prescribe pills, creams, ointments or shots.
