Police say a body found in a swamp has solved the mystery of what happened to a 300-pound man who disappeared more than four years ago after his car crashed a few feet away.
A state road crew found the remains Wednesday while working on a storm sewer in a deep ravine along U.S. 23 in Livingston County's Green Oak Township, located about 30 miles west-northwest of Detroit.
Township police Chief Robert Brookins confirmed Saturday to the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell that the body was that of 62-year-old John Gilboe of Hamburg Township.
Brookins says the identification was made with dental records.
Police found his crashed vehicle on a snowy Jan. 31, 2005. They say Gilboe disappeared after declining a passing driver's offer to call 911.
