Among the 600,000 hysterectomies performed each year, about a third of them are due to excessive menstrual bleeding.
Now, a new procedure that controls bleeding without forcing patients into early menopause has become available.
It's called "Her Option", a new technique that uses cryogenics to destroy the uterine lining by freezing it.
Doctors say the procedure can bring permanent if not long-lasting reduction of menstrual flow. It works by using a probe that is inserted vaginally through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. From there, the tissue is frozen around the probe tip.
Through warming and cooling, the process is continually repeated for about 20 minutes.
Past procedures were limited destroying all of the uterine lining. Now, the technique is ideal for women who don't plan on having any more children.
It also helps those whose periods last for long periods of time.
