If you're like me, you've been shopping around for fireworks. But if you're like most, you're not 100 percent sure what's legal and what isn't.
If they make a loud bang or leave the ground-- they're illegal or you need a permit. Smoke bombs are alright but bottle rockets and firecrackers are not.
Kids often get hurt because they don't know the dangers, they're curious, and they don't have the coordination to handle them safely. Don't think just because they're legal they aren't dangerous either-- 92 percent of fireworks injuries in the ER are from legal fireworks.
Dr. Michael Clark, senior attending physician at Sparrow Hospital tells us the three most common injuries from fireworks are to the eyes, the hands, and burns. When they happen, you shouldn't hesitate getting attention even if you think it's not serious.
"Sometimes it can be misleading," says Clark. "The burn may not look that bad, but because it's a chemical burn, it burns very deeply and it can be a deep second or third degree burn."
Let's talk prevention. Parental supervision is one everybody can agree on and can't be stressed enough. Clark believes another big one is, no alcohol. Combining booze with explosives is the type of logic that will, in Clark's words, lead to having fingers being blown off.
Just be careful. Remember even sparklers get hot enough to cause third degree burns.
Also think about your pets. They have sensitive ears and are easily frightened when fireworks go off, so it's best to keep them indoors.
