A child who refuses to go to class or acts up once he's there may actually have a condition called Social Anxiety Disorder. The symptoms can show up early, even in kindergarteners.

Kids with Social Phobia are overwhelmed by everyday moments.

A psychiatrist at Rush University Medical Center says students with Social Anxiety Disorder avoid speaking up, are too shy to get involved in social activities and stay by themselves at lunch.

Good teachers notice this in students; parents should ask for a teacher's observations if their child is having difficulty.

Children that aren't treated at an early age have a higher risk for depression, drug and alcohol abuse as adults.
