"A new twist to an old scam;" it's a warning tonight from the Lansing Police Department. Officers tell News Ten, con artists are tricking people by offering what seems like a legitimate job opportunity.
The scammers are posting openings for secret shoppers, that's a job where you pretend to be a store or restaurant patron and critique it.
The thieves send the victim a letter of instruction and a cashiers check.
They say to cash the check, send a portion of the money back and to shop with the rest. It turns out, the check is fake and the victim never sees his or her money again.
Lansing police say the people behind these schemes are typically based in another country, making investigations nearly impossible.
They say if a company asks you to cash a check, and send money back, it's probably a scam.
