Day Care Worker Faces Felony Charges

By  |

Jana Barnes faces eleven counts of second degree child abuse charges, one charge for each toddler and infant the day care provider left alone in her house while she ran errands Wednesday afternoon.

Barnes turned herself into authorities on Friday when she learned the prosecutor filed charges against her.

Prosecutors say Barnes has a clean criminal history, but now she faces up to four years in prison for each felony count against her. Meanwhile, the state child licensing division is considering disciplinary action against Barnes. It's possible officials will recommend suspending or completely revoking the license Barnes has held on to since 1997.

Barnes is not behind bars. She is free on a $50,000 personal recognizance bond. Barnes asked for a court-appointed attorney to help her case. She will meet with that attorney September 26. She has a preliminary court appearance scheduled for October 1, 2003 at 8:30 a.m.
