East Lansing city officials say over the few years healthcare costs have been going through the roof and if something wasn't done, jobs for city employees would have been on the line.
East Lansing was able to avoid lay-offs by bringing labor and management together. Both sides were part of a task force aimed at solving rising health care costs.
Some employees agreed to switch to generic prescription drugs and the city decided to hire a third party to provide health care, saving more than $500,000 jobs and more importantly saving jobs.
The city is receiving the Superior Innovation Award from the Michigan Municipal League for its efforts.
