Kids crossing the road for convenience, skipping through streets for a shortcut; Waverly students practice the risky run every school day, and Lansing Rep. Michael Murphy (D-Lansing) says it has got to stop.
Murphy wants all schools along speedy streets to have safe crossing areas installed within 200 yards of their campuses. It's part of his Jasmine Miles School Children Safety Act, a bill honoring the memory of 13-year-old Jasmine Miles. Miles died trying to cross St. Joe Highway on her way home from school.
Meanwhile, Delta Township manager Richard Watkins says the township is planning a community meeting where local residents can offer input as to how many sidewalks and crossing areas are needed in Delta Township.
The meeting is September 30 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Waverly Middle School Auditorium at 620 Snow Road.
