After a year of planning and work, the Portland Fire Department will dedicate a memorial to fire fighters who lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center, in a special ceremony Thursday.
Captain Mark Ackerson spearheaded the effort, making a request for the town of Portland to get a piece of steel from the towers. The steel is now on a pedestal, with 9-11 poured in concrete underneath.
He says the inspiration for the design came from the movie, Signs.
So, the 9-11 is made to replicate a crop circle.
The fire department expects more than 300 fire fighters from across the state to attend, as well as hundreds from the community.
The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. Thursday. It will feature speeches, a flag raising ceremony, and music.
