Trial begins for Samuel Courtland, the Lansing man accused of abusing and killing his former girlfriend's son.

A jury was selected Monday and will hear opening statements Tuesday.

In May 2005, a two-year-old with broken bones and iron burns was taken into a hospital but did not survive.

The mother, Cynthia Daniel, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse. She will testify against Courtland.
