Waverly Schools Kicking Off Safety Campaign

Watching kids cross St. Joe Highway on the first day of school is a tough reminder for Michelle Miles. Last Spring her daughter Jasmine died crossing St. Joe Highway on her way home from Waverly Middle School.

Michelle wants to stop another accident from happening this school year. That's why she and her husband are rallying parents and community members to help fight for sidewalks on both sides of the road, overhead walkways and reduced speeds along the highway.

Jasmine's school district is also kicking off a safety campaign. This week students will receive educational pamphlets about walking to school safely. Also motorists and businesses will receive stickers and posters to put in the cars and store windows.

The district spent about $5,000 developing the safety campaign, and they plan to include students in more safety efforts later in the school year.
