Hours before the school year, the East Lansing School District was busy creating a backup plan to accommodate about 150 students that could not occupy temporary classrooms due to code issues.
The portable units did not yet abide by state building codes, and the district is busy working with architects and inspectors to get approval.
Portable were in place to accommodate students while the high school undergoes a multimillion dollar construction project.
The superintendent for the school district says more efficient scheduling and the use of the library for classrooms will address the space needs.
Teacher's representatives are concerned about the working and learning conditions they might see when students arrive to the high school Sept. 2.
If classrooms are unacceptable to teachers a representative has threatened a grievance.
