August Blackout Result of Poor Communication

Michigan utility regulator say the August blackout that left most of Lansing in the dark could have been avoided with better communication between system operators.

The Michigan Public Service Commission's report criticizes the lack of coordination between Indiana's Midwest Independent System Operator and PJM Interconnection. PJM operates the energy market from New Jersey to West Virginia. The report says the regional transmission organizations failed to detect the scope of power problems in Ohio.

Michigan is the first state affected by the blackout to release its investigation results. The August 14th power outage stretched from New York to Michigan and into Canada, covering an area populated by 50 million people.
