Doctor Shortage

Baby boomer doctors are retiring and high malpractice costs are forcing some doctors out of practice. This as health industry experts say Michigan will face a shortage of as many as six thousand doctors by 2020.

Matthew Rush, Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital C.E.O., says it’s a problem that could leave you with a difficult time finding care.

"There could be access problems. It is going to have an affect on emergency rooms. People can't get in to see their doctors they end up in the E.R, which isn't equipped for primary care."

On top of longer waits for appointments, analysts say expect health care costs to increase, and some doctors to turn away patients all together.

Meanwhile, Michigan isn't alone with the problem. By 2020, a shortage of 85,000 doctors is predicted nationwide.
