Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos says politicians shouldn't be able to accept free tickets or trips from lobbyists.

The Ada businessman also would like to ban state contractors from giving to gubernatorial campaigns and require a three-year wait before government officials could become lobbyists.

Legislation already introduced by GOP Representative Chris Ward of Brighton would ban lobbyists from paying for lawmakers' travel unless it was within Michigan. The DeVos ban would go further.

Governor Granholm and Democratic lawmakers offered their own ethics package in April.

It called for requiring gubernatorial candidates to release their tax returns and annual disclosure of financial interests by state elected officials and candidates, among other changes.
