Hundreds gathered Tuesday in Jackson to mourn the loss of a Mid-Michigan soldier killed in Iraq on Oct. 13.
Douglas Wheeler, known as D.J. to his friends, was killed after his unit came under attack in Tikrit, Iraq. The 22-year-old soldier grew up in Concord and attended Lumen Christi High School. He graduated in 1999.
The fallen soldier was honored with a 21-gun salute. Hundreds gathered at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Church to mourn Wheeler. More than 400 students from Lumen Christi high School lined the street as the processional went by. And hundreds of community members did the same, holding signs and waving flags, remembering D.J and supporting U.S. troops.
Wheeler is survived by his parents and 11 brothers and sisters. They remember him as fun-loving. And also as some one who was very committed to his country.
