Mexican Citizens Get Passports, IDs

For the first time, the Mexican Consulate held a mobile consulate in Lansing. Mexican citizens living here in the United States renewed passports and identification cards Saturday. The event, held at Cristo Rey Community Center, made it easier for Mexican immigrants to get their ids here instead of driving to Detroit.

Three-hundred Mexicans lined up for the service, some as early as 2 a.m. Mexican Consul Antonio Estrada says everyone needs a valid ID. Those issued Saturday allow the Mexican citizens to do everything from open bank accounts here in the U.S. to travel back and forth to Mexico.

The Consul is not affiliated with U.S. immigration services, and legal status here was not a requirement to be issued Mexican passports and IDs. Cristo Rey executive director John Roy Castillo says he hopes the mobile consulate becomes a yearly event.
