SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Officials say more than $40,000 in cash has been stolen from a suburban Detroit church following its Easter services.
The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reports the break-in occurred late Sunday or early Monday at St. Therese of Lisieux church in Macomb County's Shelby Township. Officials say a number of chalices also were taken from the Roman Catholic church.
Linda Maccarone, church manager, says the theft is "very disheartening." She says officials last checked the building about 9 p.m. Sunday following five services that day.
WXYZ-TV reports St. Luke Lutheran Church in Clinton Township also was targeted late Sunday or early Monday. It wasn't revealed how much was taken.
The churches are the latest targeted in Macomb County in recent months. St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Utica also was hit.
